Bengali Style Steamed Fish in Mustard Sauce

This is one delicious and healthy dish that takes less than 10 minutes to put together. I made a few changes to the original recipe to suit our taste. I also used ready made English mustard sauce instead of home made mustard paste. This one is a must try.

Ingredients
  • 500 gms fish fillets (I used sea bass but other firm white fish will do nicely)
  • Mix together into a paste:
    • 2 tbsp mustard sauce (I used Dijon mustard)
    • 1 tsp red chilli powder (or green chilli paste)
    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • A pinch of sugar
    • 1 tbsp mustard oil
    • Salt to taste
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 2 green chillis slit
Method
  • In a stainless steel box (which comes with a lid) and mix together fish pieces and the mustard-masala paste
  • Sprinkle chopped onions (raw or fried) on the fish
  • Put the slit green chillies over the fish
  • Close the box with the lid
  • Pour 2 cups of water in a large pan (or pressure cooker), place the box inside and steam for 20 minutes on medium heat. If the water in the pan gets dried up, add more water
  • Remove from heat, garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot either by itself or with steamed rice.
